TAsten, TAnz & TAgtool – Chen Mao Shuen

For more than a decade, the series TAsten, TAnz & TAgtool has been dedicated to contemporary composition pioneered by its artists in dialogue between music, movement, and live light drawing.
For each issue, Albert Mühlböck (piano), Bea von Schrader (dance), and Die.Puntigam (Tagtool / live light drawing) develop a new performative composition based on the works of selected composers. Sound, bodies, and images meet each other as equally valued artistic layers and unfold within a shared artistic process.
The previous editions have included artistic engagements with John Cage, Terry Riley, Tan Dun, Sofia Gubaidulina, Josef Matthias Hauer, Les Six, Werner Schulze, Iannis Xenakis, Joan Tower, György Ligeti, Luigi Nono, and Arvo Pärt.
At the center of the 13th edition is the Taiwanese composer Chen Mao Shuen. His composition studies brought him to Vienna in the early 1970s, where he studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts. His 90th birthday in 2026 provides the occasion to encounter his work anew from today’s perspective.
Alongside works by Franz Liszt, Alexander Scriabin, and Pierre Boulez, a musical arc of tension unfolds, bringing different compositional positions into relation with one another. From this emerges an artistic dialogue between music, dance, and live light drawing that lets the past and the present resonate with each other.
The performance on August 1, 2026 brings together concert and performance into a single shared artistic event.
A vegan evening menu specially developed for this occasion by Aaron Beck draws on Austrian and Taiwanese influences and invites you to linger and connect before the performance, during the intermission, and afterward.
