Urhof20 - Kunsthaus GaS

Background and vision

There was a lively social life in Grünbach am Schneeberg in the 1920s. Around 1400 people were employed in the coal mine. In their free time, they began building the workers' home, which later became the Grünbacherhof and is now the Urhof20. This provided space for festivities, dance events, musical performances, meetings and cinema.

The workers' home was closed in the 1960s and reopened as the Grünbacherhof in the 1970s.
The last masked ball was held in the ballroom in 1987, before it fell into a 20-year slumber.
In 2008, performance artist Bea von Scharder discovered the desolate property.
In 2011, the KultURverein GrünbacherHOF - Urhof20 was founded.
The aim of the association is to revitalize and revive this historic cultural site.

In 2022, the "Grünbacherhof" sign was removed after around 50 years and Kunsthaus GaS was born.

Kunsthaus GaS invites you to contemporary art in the musical, performing and visual arts.

Based on a focus on dance and performance, Urhof20 sees itself as a platform for networking work with artists from the fields of music, performing arts and the visual arts with a focus on visual, digital art. This combination of different disciplines creates a place where transmedia art is defined, reflected and recreated. This results in impulses and networks that become visible in the regional, national and international art world. Urhof20 thus acts as a nucleus for a new type of art production, event conception and, above all, as a laboratory for intensive research in the independent art and culture sector.

Space and surroundings

Kunsthaus GaS consists of a theater hall, the foyer with a bar, as well as a cellar hall and the garden. The gallery, upper floor and outbuildings are not yet open to the public.
The Urhof20 association is working to revitalize the entire building complex. The project is being implemented through donations, crowdfunding, grants and active assistance.
